How Nucor standardized construction management on a $1.7B steel mill
Nucor brought 1,000+ project stakeholders into one secure VPO environment for its Brandenburg plate mill,
standardizing workflows and cutting project email by 50%.
The Background
A Steelmaking Leader with
a Growing Capital Program
Nucor is North America’s largest steel producer, with more than 33,000 employees and operations across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. As the company continued to grow its core steelmaking operations, its capital construction program expanded with it.
Multiple greenfield and brownfield projects were underway across Nucor’s divisions, each with its own approach to construction management. The corporate construction group needed a more consistent way to manage project information, track work, and establish common practices across an increasingly complex portfolio.

The Project
Construction of a $1.7 Billion State-of-the-Art Steel Plate Mill
Nucor evaluated six construction management platforms, piloted VPO in 2019, and selected it to support the $1.7 billion Brandenburg plate mill in Kentucky.

The Challenge
Growing project volume exposed gaps
in consistency and coordination.
Nucor’s construction workload was expanding across divisions, but the processes used to manage those projects varied from team to team.
That made it difficult to establish consistent practices and maintain visibility across the broader capital program.
Project coordination also depended heavily on email. With OEMs, equipment suppliers, contractors, vendors, and Nucor teams all involved, the volume of information quickly became hard to manage. McBroome described the team as “overrun and drowning in emails” before VPO.
Security added another layer of complexity. Nucor needed to collaborate with multiple external partners while protecting confidential bid and commercial information from other participants in the same project.
The company needed a cloud-based construction management environment that could standardize workflows, support large numbers of internal and external users, and maintain appropriate access to project information throughout design, sourcing, construction, and commissioning.
"We are not a construction firm. We are a steel-making company that is growing rapidly, with several large construction projects going on at the same time."

The Result
Greater consistency across projects,
with less email and better visibility
The Brandenburg project put VPO to work on a significant scale. Nucor managed more than 1,200 RFQs, more than 3,000 RFIs, and more than 1,000 internal and external users within the same secure environment.
The project rolled its first plate off the line in December 2022. Nucor reported that Brandenburg was delivered on time and on budget, with one of the safest mill start-ups in company history. In the second quarter of 2026, the facility shipped more than 230,000 tons, setting a quarterly record.*
"With VPO, it's so much easier to access and coordinate information and activity without having to write a bunch of email messages."
